Chromatic Code Series
Color is not static; it shifts with light, surroundings and the hues placed beside it. As illumination changes, colors can deepen, soften, warm, or recede, while juxtaposing hues alter how each color is perceived. A tone may appear more luminous, muted, cool, or intense simply through its relationship to the colors around it. These subtle interactions make color a continually changing part of the visual experience. One I am deeply drawn to.
I spend my summers in Maine, looking out from the land on to the water. The colors intrigue me, because nowhere else on Earth do the greens and blues look quite as rich and vibrant. Even putting them together on a piece like this brings me relaxing joy.
Measure Of Scale I

I’ve never really gravitated toward primary colors when painting. Instead I have tended to lean more toward complex or muted tones in my work. For this painting, however, I chose a close to primary blue as my background and ended up enjoying the addition of solid red, a range of greens and sparking gold to round out the work. Never say never, I guess.

I am a curious person by nature, and science is something I have always been interested in. I’m not reading “A Brief History Of Time” by Stephen Hawking.cover-to-cover like my mom did, but I do enjoy the complexities of the physical world. This piece reminds me of the beauty of complexity.
Seven Up

Life pulls us in so many directions. Sometimes it is difficult to know which way to go. But if we trust the current of life to pull us where we need to go, our course becomes evident over time. When I painted this, I realized I had the ecru “sand” crashing onto a blue green “shore”. How interesting, I thought afterwards. And why not this reversal.

On any given day I am struck by the verdant colors of nature. Walking through the woods I come upon a footbridge with composing leaves on one side, and light reflecting in a pond on the other. How rich the natural world is, and what a gift we have in observing her.
